In October of 2009, San Diego mosaic artist Kirstin Green brought 5 Coronado high school art students to Ghana, West Africa to create a permanent mosaic mural to help promote ecotourism as well as beautify the city center of Tema, a port city along the coast. Working with African high school art students, they were able to create the large mosaic in just under 3 weeks.
Tema, Ghana’s largest port, is the nearest city to the geographical position of 0 degrees longitude and 0 degrees latitude — placing it close to the center of the world. The wall features a Ghanian girl standing on a beach holding a bowl of fish and fruit over her head, surrounded by African symbols. The writing on the boats behind her says: “Tema, Centre of the World.”
Kristen approached us and told us that when visiting Ghana, it is customary to give gifts to friends and hosts. We were happy to help out and hooked up all the kids with some killer Obama T-shirts, which were given to the African students at the end of the project.
